Balkan Trail Running
Trail Running in
North Macedonia
Galicica above Europe’s oldest lake. Šar Mountain glacial terrain. Five races in 2026. North Macedonia is one of the Balkans’ most underrated trail running destinations.
UNESCO Trails and Wild Alpine Terrain
North Macedonia is one of the Balkans’ most underrated trail running destinations. Galicica National Park rises sharply above Lake Ohrid — Europe’s oldest lake and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — offering wild alpine terrain with almost no crowds.
The Šar Mountain range in the north shares glacial landscapes and endemic wildlife with Kosovo. The Ohrid Ultra Trail has established this country firmly on the international trail running calendar, and with five races in 2026, the scene is growing fast.
Where to Run in North Macedonia
Galicica — Lake Ohrid Ridgeline
The backbone of the Ohrid Ultra Trail. Running the Galicica ridge gives panoramic views over both Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa simultaneously — one of the most striking viewpoints in the Balkans. Trails range from accessible lake-level paths to serious high-altitude routes.
Šar Mountain
The northern range bordering Kosovo — 30+ glacial lakes, 200 endemic plant species, brown bears, and chamois. The High Scardus Trail passes through here on its 362km route. A serious mountain environment with genuine wilderness character.
Pelister National Park
Pelister rises to 2,601m above Bitola in southwestern Macedonia. Home to two trail races in 2026 — the Pelister Unique Trail Marathon (June) and Pelister Ultra-Trail (August). Some of the best high-altitude terrain in the country.
Vodno — Matka Canyon, Skopje
The forested mountain above Skopje combined with the Matka Canyon gorge. Well-used trail networks, accessible for day runs from the capital. The Vodno-Matka Trail Marathon uses these slopes each April.
