About Albania

One of Europe’s Last Wild Mountain Frontiers

Albania has one of Europe’s most spectacular mountain landscapes and one of its least crowded trail networks. The Albanian Alps — known as the Accursed Mountains or Bjeshkët e Nëmuna — rise sharply above the Valbona and Theth valleys, with ridgelines above 2,500m, glacial lakes, and remote villages connected by the same mule tracks used for centuries.

In the south, the Vjosa River carves through gorges and canyon country, providing a completely different running experience. Albania trail running is raw, physical, and genuinely unforgettable.

Key Routes

Where to Run in Albania

Route 01

Valbona to Theth

16km 1,100m D+ Point-to-point Iconic

The most celebrated trail in the Albanian Alps. Crosses the heart of the Accursed Mountains to around 1,800m. Runnable in both directions — combine with nights in each valley for a natural multi-day itinerary.

Route 02

Peaks of the Balkans — Albania Section

Multi-day 3 Countries Remote

Route 03

Gerbaja Valley

High-altitude Cross-border Low traffic

A stunning high-altitude valley run crossing into Montenegro and back. Less visited than Valbona–Theth, with extraordinary scenery and near-zero foot traffic. One of the hidden gems of the Albanian Alps.

Route 04

Accursed Mountains Ridgelines

Above 2,000m Technical Navigation required

Technical high-altitude running above 2,000m, best accessed from Theth or Valbona. Requires mountain experience and navigation skills. Wild landscape that feels nothing like the packaged Alps.
