Balkan Trail Running
Trail Running
in Serbia
A UTMB World Series race on Stara Planina. A 49-year-old trail marathon past medieval monasteries. Serbia has the most developed trail running scene in the Western Balkans.
The Most Developed Trail Scene in the Balkans
Serbia’s trail running scene is one of the most developed in the Western Balkans — with a race calendar that punches well above the country’s profile. Stara Planina in the east is a UTMB World Series venue, bringing international-standard trail racing to a dramatic plateau of gorges, waterfalls, and open ridgelines.
Fruška Gora in the north is a completely different experience — rolling hills dotted with medieval Orthodox monasteries, offering one of the most unusual and beautiful trail running backdrops in Europe. Running past 14th-century monasteries on a race course is something you won’t find anywhere else.
Where to Run in Serbia
Stara Planina
The old mountain range in eastern Serbia — a broad plateau rising to 2,169m at Midžur, cut by deep gorges and the Temska and Visočica rivers. Babin Zub is the main hub. Remote, dramatic, and undervisited outside of race season.
Fruška Gora — Monastery Trail
An 80km east-west ridge above the Danube with excellent singletrack through oak and beech forests. Medieval Orthodox monasteries — Grgeteg (15th c.), Novo Hopovo (14th c.), Jazak (16th c.) — serve as waypoints on one of Europe’s most culturally unique trail routes.
Tara National Park
Dense forest and canyon country above the Drina River, with views into Bosnia. Less developed race infrastructure but outstanding terrain for self-guided running. One of Serbia’s most beautiful national parks.
Zlatibor Plateau
An accessible mountain plateau in western Serbia — good terrain for moderate trail running, popular with domestic runners and well-connected by road. A solid base for exploring the wider Tara-Zlatibor mountain region.
