Balkan Trail Running
Trail Running
in Kosovo
The Sharr Mountains. Rugova Canyon. A cross-border race starting at a medieval fortress. Kosovo is the Western Balkans’ most exciting trail running destination you haven’t heard of yet.
Small Country. Outsized Mountains.
Kosovo is the Balkans’ best-kept trail running secret. A small country with an outsized mountain character — the Sharr Mountains in the south, the Accursed Mountains in the west, and the Rugova Canyon cutting through some of the most dramatic terrain in Southeast Europe.
The trail running scene here is young and rapidly growing, with international races now drawing runners from across Europe. The High Scardus Ultra crosses into North Macedonia on high-altitude ridgelines above 2,000m — one of the most exciting race formats in the region. Come before the crowds do.
Where to Run in Kosovo
Livadhi i Sakës — Peja
Starts from Peja city center along the Lumbardhi River promenade. Climbs through protected meadows to a plateau with views across the Vjellaku massif and down into the Rugova gorge. Links into wider Peja trail network for 15–25km days.
Hajla Peak — Rugova Ridge
The highest point of the Rugova Valley at 2,403m, sitting on the Montenegro border. Route from Drelaj village via Reka e Allagës. One of the finest summit runs in the Western Balkans — ridge views into three countries.
Rugova Canyon Trails
25km of gorge carved by the Lumbardhi river. Trail options range from flat canyon-floor running to technical climbs into the canyon walls. The via ferrata routes sit within the same canyon — ideal for combining run and climb days.
Sharr Mountains — High Scardus
The southern Sharr range around Prizren offers high-altitude terrain used by the High Scardus Ultra race. Glacial lakes, 30+ glacial formations, endemic flora, and ridgelines crossing into North Macedonia.
