Balkan Trail Running
Trail Running
in Montenegro
Sea level to 2,523m in a few hours. Durmitor’s glacial lakes. The wild Prokletije. Montenegro packs more trail running terrain per square kilometre than anywhere in the Balkans.
From the Adriatic to the Alps in One Day
Montenegro packs an extraordinary range of terrain into a small country — from the Adriatic coastline at sea level to Bobotov Kuk at 2,523m. Durmitor National Park is the centrepiece: a high plateau with 48 peaks over 2,000m, 48 glacial lakes, and a trail running race that draws international runners each July.
To the west, the Prokletije mountains connect to Albania and Kosovo with some of the most remote terrain in the Balkans. The Boka Bay coastline offers a completely different experience — sea-level trails with dramatic views of Montenegro’s UNESCO fjord.
Where to Run in Montenegro
Durmitor National Park
Montenegro’s trail running playground. The Black Lake loop (3.2km) is an easy start. The Škrka Waterfall loop from Žabljak (9km) is a favourite. The full Ten Lakes loop (42km / 2,094m D+) is one of the great trail routes in Southeast Europe.
Prokletije Mountains
The Montenegrin side of the Accursed Mountains — wild, remote, connecting to the Peaks of the Balkans trail into Albania and Kosovo. Entry-level sections accessible from Plav and Gusinje. The Prokletije 100 Miles covers 177km and 11,000m of gain.
Boka Bay — Coastal to Summit
Start at the Adriatic and climb to Lovćen National Park above Kotor. A unique contrast run using the Boka Bay Trail (Salomon) route — one of the most visually striking settings for trail running in the region.
Komovi Mountains
Less visited than Durmitor, the Komovi range in eastern Montenegro offers serious ridge running and scrambling above 2,400m with few other people on the trails. One of Montenegro’s best-kept running secrets.

Getting to Montenegro
Flights
Fly into Podgorica (TGD) or Tivat (TIV). Both are served by European carriers, with Tivat seeing more summer flights. Dubrovnik (Croatia) is also a convenient entry point.
Getting to the Trails
Žabljak (Durmitor) is 2.5 hours from Podgorica by bus or car. Tivat is the base for coastal running and the Boka Bay Trail. Plav and Gusinje (Prokletije) are 3 hours east of Podgorica.
Accommodation
Žabljak has a good range of guesthouses and hotels — book ahead for July race weekend. Kotor old town is a beautiful base for coastal trail running. Mountain huts are available for multi-day routes in Durmitor and Prokletije.
Currency & Practicalities
Montenegro uses the Euro (EUR). Cards accepted in towns. Cash useful in mountain areas. Žabljak can be cold even in summer — bring layers. Durmitor roads can be snowy as late as May.
