Balkan Trail Running
Trail Running
in Albania
The Accursed Mountains. The Vjosa Wild River. Routes that were closed to the world for decades — now some of the finest trail running in Europe.
One of Europe’s Last Wild Mountain Frontiers
Albania has one of Europe’s most spectacular mountain landscapes and one of its least crowded trail networks. The Albanian Alps — known as the Accursed Mountains or Bjeshkët e Nëmuna — rise sharply above the Valbona and Theth valleys, with ridgelines above 2,500m, glacial lakes, and remote villages connected by the same mule tracks used for centuries.
In the south, the Vjosa River carves through gorges and canyon country, providing a completely different running experience. Albania trail running is raw, physical, and genuinely unforgettable.
Where to Run in Albania
Valbona to Theth
The most celebrated trail in the Albanian Alps. Crosses the heart of the Accursed Mountains to around 1,800m. Runnable in both directions — combine with nights in each valley for a natural multi-day itinerary.
Peaks of the Balkans — Albania Section
The Albania leg of the 192km transnational trail passes through Valbona, Theth, and the Gerbaja Valley, crossing into Montenegro and Kosovo. Ancient tracks through terrain closed to outsiders for decades.
Gerbaja Valley
A stunning high-altitude valley run crossing into Montenegro and back. Less visited than Valbona–Theth, with extraordinary scenery and near-zero foot traffic. One of the hidden gems of the Albanian Alps.
Accursed Mountains Ridgelines
Technical high-altitude running above 2,000m, best accessed from Theth or Valbona. Requires mountain experience and navigation skills. Wild landscape that feels nothing like the packaged Alps.

Valbona and Theth are reached via the Lake Koman ferry from Fierza — a stunning approach in itself. Allow a full day from Tirana. The ferry runs daily in summer.
Accommodation
Valbona and Theth have a strong network of family guesthouses (bujtina) operating May–October. Book ahead for July–August. Home-cooked food is one of the highlights of the trip.
Currency & Practicalities
Albanian Lek (ALL). Cash is essential in mountain villages — no card facilities in Valbona or Theth. Mobile coverage is limited above 1,500m.
